Balm of Gilead Sod®™ The Secret Royal Recipe

This is one of the hardest oils to blend because this blend actually has a specific amount of each oil according to the Hebrew texts of the Tanach and Hebrew texts of Jewish Sages. This is an especially well-kept secret like the Shemen sod of the Ketoret (Temple Incense blend).

Be aware there are many fragrance companies on the market that have tried to copy this Balm of Gilead royal recipe, but always fail because they do not know how the blend is properly mixed and how much of each ingredient is in the original recipe and they often times use synthetic oils. So this is the original recipe you are purchasing on our website and in our shop, not a cheap copy.

The Balm of Gilead is an aromatic resin, sap, also its leaves and twigs are used for medical purposes that were exported from Tyre and elsewhere. This is seen in scriptures where it is mentioned that the Ishmaelites (Arabs) who carried Yosef into Mitzrayim bondage were also Gilead Balm traders who were passing through the holy from hills of Gilead in Jericho Valley.

The Holy One arranged for a Spice caravan to bring Joseph to Egypt, so he would be surrounded by pleasant and intoxicating fragrances that enhance dreams and gave him the gift of interpreting dreams such as Balsam, Labdanum (Rose of Sharon), and Frankincense. See Genesis 37:25. The fruit was usually crushed and made into a gooey salve. The resin was used for Holy Temple incense and the leaves were used to make healing oil. The whole tree was used nothing was ever thrown away or wasted.

Balsam trees are native to the Gilead area of Jericho Valley near the Dead Sea. Incisions in the bark of a balsam tree yield three or four drops a day from each, and left to stand the balsam becomes of a golden color and pellucid as a gem. Balm was so scarce that the Jericho gardens yielded only six or seven gallons yearly, which was worth twice its weight in silver or gold. Thus it is referred to as the Royal Perfume.

There is further mention of these trees in the books of Samuel and first Chronicles where we are told the story of how David inquired of G-d whether to go up against the enemy or not and G-d instructed “You shall not go directly up; circle around behind them and come at them in front of the balsam trees. And it shall be, when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the Balsam of Gilead trees, then you shall act promptly, for then I, your G-d will have gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines.”

Take note in this text that our Jewish Sages and Rabbonim (Rabbis) tells us it was the Balm of Gilead tree’s aroma which hid the scent of David’s army. The enemy could not smell them coming in the upwind, but King David could hear them coming to know when to strike.

In the story of Ruth we find the balm of Gilead played a part. Joshua 13:32 :
“These are the areas which Moses had distributed as an inheritance in the PLAINS OF MOAB on the other side of the Jordan, by Jericho eastward.” (This include the Jericho Valley or Hills of Gilead where the Balm of Gilead was cultivated.) Ruth’s family was living in this very same area.

Balm of Gilead or a blend was most likely the perfume she used when she visited Boaz on the threshing floor.
Ruth 3:3-5 what does Naomi tell Ruth to do before and after she goes to the threshing-floor that night? Naomi tells Ruth to wash, perfume herself and put on her cloak. Go to the threshing-floor. “Do not let Boaz recognize you during the feasting When he sleeps, lie down at his feet and uncover him. Do whatever he tells you to do.”

Today the Ancient Balsam of Gilead is once again back in Israel. Guy Erlich got his first plant from a shoot that was smuggled by a German scientist out of Saudi Arabia and brought to Israel and is now being reintroduced in Israel and the trees are once again flourishing along with the Frankincense trees.

Psalm 56 says “You have taken account of my wanderings; put my tears in your bottle; are not in your book? In the ancient world, when a loved one died, mourners would catch their falling tears in a bottle and bury them as a token of eternal remembrance and devotion. The tears of a loved one are worth more than gold.

Psalm 84 also speaks about Bacha (weeping) where it says ‘How blessed is the man whose strength is in you; in whose heart are the highways {to Zion} Passing through the valley of Baca, they make it a spring, the early rain also covers it with blessings. They go from strength to strength, {all of them} appears before G-d in Zion.”
