Fragrance Testing and Beyond
Odor Evaluation is First over Analyst tests Written by R. Sari (c) 2011
A highly trained and skilled perfumer or essential oils analyst expert might immediately spot a quality control problem with an oil sample before committing the oil to more sophisticated analytical tests – in fact the essential oil may simply be rejected on a poor or uncharacteristic odor profile.
So, in spite of great technological advancements in analysis techniques (sometimes bordering on scientific imperialism), the trained nose can still be the single most important arbiter of quality, and it is important to keep sight of this fact.” I remember being just totally put down by my peers when I said the first evaluation of a new sample is organoleptic.. how it smells.. and if it didn’t smell “right” I went no further. I was mocked for claiming that the our noses could detect poor quality, it seems that the nose cannot lie and here is why.
It turns out that the nose is the Torah was not apart of the sin in the Garden. It was the one sense that was not directly affected by that sin. therefore according to Master Aroma-therapist Rabbi Avraham Sandand countless other sholars and Sages that the sense of smell is divine.
Smell is considered the loftiest and most transcendent sense. The Arizal says that when the sin of Adam brought lust into the world it affected all of the senses except for that of smell. The sense of smell remained unaffected. We see that in the Gan Aden that Chava (Eve) used all her senses except one which is the sense of smell when she ate the forbidden fruit. As a result, we were left with only our divine sense of smell which still helps us know, innately, the exact herbs and oils we need to balance and heal ourselves.
The verse “All the soul shall praise G-d” (Tehillim 150:6) teaches us that there is a praise of G-d which belongs to the soul alone. The Talmud asks, “What is it that provides enjoyment for the soul, but not for the body? “Fragrance” (Berakhot 43b).
At the simplest level, the statement that smell benefits the soul and not the body means that smell does not fulfill any bodily need and does not become part of the body – unlike food and drink. For this reason, we could think that it is not a real or substantial enjoyment, and does not require a blessing. That is why a Biblical source for the obligation is required. What fragrance brings Joy in our soul will tell us what we are lacking in the physical body to bring up our divine smell to be pleasing aroma to G-d.
This means that the sense of smell has the ability to create a certain response in our brain prior to our logical consideration. Often this response comes in the form of a memory, or a strong emotional response to a certain aroma. Hashem made use of His beautiful design to engage klal Yisroel in Tefilla and worship through the sense of smell.
We must also understand that we must care for our bodies. “It is meritorious to anoint our bodies for healing because our bodies are a miniature image of the Holy Temple”. If we do not take care of our body’s Temple then we have a hint in Lev 26:31 “And I (G-d) will… bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savour of your sweet odors.”
Every soul on this planet has a smell frequency that can become foul smelling because of poor choices. Like for example not eating correctly, too much alcohol or the use of drugs can and does change our frequency in smell, not to mention the energy change in our bodies. By using the divine gift we have from the Garden of Eden we can bring our frequency of sweet odor to our creator but also to those around us. weather you know it or not we do chose our mate and friends by odor. Do you ever wonder why people use so much synthetic fragrance when dating, what are these people covering up, what is it that they do not want you to know?
Professor Tim Jacob, head of the smell research laboratory at Cardiff University, claims that in finding our perfect partner, we are reacting to the subtle odor we are all born with. He claims this phenomenon is nature’s way of ensuring that children are born with the strongest immune systems possible to fight off disease. And when it comes to finding your husband or wife, the research reveals that opposites do attract. “This is a subtle smell – it’s not the sweaty body odor someone has after doing hard manual labor for a few days without washing,” he said. “This is an inherent smell that we all carry – you can’t change it by washing or perfume.”
Prof Jacob has found that every person is born with a certain odour-type, which is dependent on their immuno-type, or immunogenetic status – the body’s own defence mechanism against disease and illness. Odor-types are not the same as pheromones, which some believe play an important role in social and chemical interaction. Sniffer dogs use odour-types to distinguish individuals, but research has also revealed that humans not only use smell to distinguish between individuals but we actively select our mates based on odor-type. Unlike any of the other senses, smell has direct access to the more primitive parts of the brain, which are linked to mood, emotion and memory – brain-imaging techniques have shown that smell can activate parts of the brain without being consciously perceived. We remember the Garden of Eden which why some sages say “we have only left the Garden in mind but not in spirit ie in smell.
Prof Jacob said there are thousands of different immuno and odour-types, but rather than seek out people with a similar smell, humans prefer to bond with people with a different odor-type, to ensure any children born as a result of their union will inherit two different immuno-types, bolstering their natural defense systems against disease.
Even science is proving that our smell has everything to do with health. Imagine what a couple smells like when they fight. Must be horrible to G-d. What does sin smell like or what does it smell like when nations is fighting with nations? We can measure the health of the world by what is happening in the world. Many of us can smell it without it being consciously perceived. Have you ever been near someone that is not quite right and you might feel unsafe around them. The first clue that is given to your mind and instincts is the smell of the person and you have no idea that has occurred.
It goes even deeper when we look at the health aspect of smell. Smell can trigger memories, evoke disgust, pleasure or change our mood, it can act as a warning or can be a sign of illness.
Just a side note, Dr. Robert O. Becker in his book “The Body Electric” the human body has an electrical frequency and that much about a person’s health can be determined by it. Frequency is the measurable rate of electrical energy flow that is constant between any two points. Everything has frequency.
The different types of perfumes we use say more about us than previously thought according to Professor Jacob. Rather than using them to smell sweet, it is now believed that we choose perfumes on the basis of how close they are to our own immuno-type, or immunogenetic status. If a group of people are offered a selection of different perfume ingredients, such as woody or floral tones, those with the same immuno-types will prefer the same type of perfume ingredients, according to Professor Jacob, head of the smell research laboratory, in the School of Biosciences, at Cardiff University. “What we are doing in choosing a certain perfume ingredient is advertising our immuno-types to others, our potential partners, and telling everyone what our health is” he added. In the word’s of Rabbi Avraham Sand “The body’s higher conscious olfactory ability to recognize its Medicine.” Fragrance Testing Technique: It took Rabbi Sand around 10 years to figure it out. He taught it to groups of healers and students within 10 minutes.

What fragrance brings you joy in your soul will indeed tell you what you lack and need in the physical for your body.
A great way to do this is to try our Frequency Testing kit ®. This testing research method by Rivka Sari is based on the proven methods and teachings and research of the world’s best known Master Aroma-therapist Rabbi Avraham Sand of Israeli author of the book “Mystical Aromatherapy”, Master Aroma-therapist and Holistic teacher Patricia Davis author of the book “Aromatherapy A-Z” and founder of the London Holistic School of Aromatherapy and Professor Tim Jacob, head of the smell research laboratory, in the School of Biosciences, at Cardiff University.
The implications of this effect on the sense of smell, and the instant, powerful response to fragrances that we experience, are very important aspects which guide the practice of Aromatherapy. Sages teach us “The sense of smell is the most spiritual of all senses. The Hebrew word for “smell,” rei’ach, is cognate to that for “spirit” (ruach). Our sages teach us that smell is the one and only sense that “the soul enjoys”.
This method is the hidden Key to Aromatherapy and the use of aromatic oils. It empowers you to choose the correct Oils and exact formulation every time. For details about Rabbi Sand’s work, please see Chapter 8 of his book “Mystical Aromatherapy”
