The breastplate of Aaron, described in the Bible, contained twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel, which later influenced the concept of birthstones. Modern birthstones are assigned to each month, but their origins can be traced back to the stones of the biblical breastplate. Each stone was engraved with the name of a tribe, symbolizing the High Priest’s role as a mediator between G-d and the Jewish people.

Bible Birthstones

The concept of birthstones is believed to have roots in the Breastplate of Aaron. Over time, the twelve stones were associated with the twelve months of the year, leading to the modern tradition of birthstones. See Exodus 28:17-21
