LIMITED SUPPLY IS EXTREMELY RARE
Fortunately, trees from this island are no longer harvested at all and it is now a strictly protected Japanese geographic zone and world heritage site since 2013. That means there is an ever-dwindling supply of this gorgeous wood available and there will be no more to come in our lifetimes to make furniture etc. Prices keep rising and items made with this wood tend to increase in value over time. Thankfully there is a replanting project going on slowly to save these beautiful trees.
In general, the Japanese cedar lives for about 500 years, but Yakusugi trees live much longer. They grow on less nutritious granite soil slowly and have a very tight grain. The wood contains a lot of resin due to Yakushima’s high rainfall and high humidity, making it resistant to rotting. As a result, these trees tend to have longer lives, and many larger trees have survived for more than 2,000 years. Because it is also rich in Pinene, Yakusugi may support a healthy respiratory system.
Yakusugi is often referred to as Japanese cedar, or Japenese Sandalwood, but it may be better to refer to these trees as just Sugi or Yakusugi as they do differ from cedar trees (cedrus) and are closer to a sandalwood tree, cypress, or spruce. You will want this historically treasured essential oil in your collection.
