Aroma is a rich sweet fresh scent of freshly cut hay on a summer’s day. Known as Sweet Broom Brush, Sweet Holy Grass, and Sweet Hay
Sweetgrass’ scientific name, Hierochloe odorata, literally means, “fragrant holy grass”. Sweetgrass in North America has an auspicious history and is referred to as one of the four sacred medicines by native Americans (the others are tobacco, white sage, and cedar). In the Middle Eastern world, there are few places where sweetgrass will grow. In Israel and Egypt this sweetgrass grows alongside the Jordon River and the River Nile.
Many sweetgrass are from France, USA, and Canada. This one is from the Holy Land. This oil is a bit sweeter and more intense in the hay notes. Really wonderful robust aroma. In Egypt, sweetgrass is often used as incense along with Frankincense and Myrrh resins. Often paired with Egyptian Rose and Neroli flowers in perfume compositions.
In the world of perfume making, this oil is referred to as, foin coupe’, or Sweet hay because it has the same aroma as hay being cut and harvested on a warm summer evening. An interesting aspect of this absolute is, the fresh grass is cut and harvested in June and July and allowed to dry naturally in the Sun until August.
During this process, the grass becomes highly fragrant, as the coumarin, the aromatic lactone responsible for the sweet, hay-like aroma, is ‘glycosidically bound’ and not volatile when grasses are living and green, but is only liberated when the plant material is cut and dried much like sage, tobacco, and cedar are.
