Enfleurage (ancient method using only organic palm oil, coconut oil & organic cane sugar alcohol to extract the essential oils). Osmically balanced (contains top, middle and bottom notes) – can be worn alone as a perfume
The entire process of extracting the gardenia oil is done by hand using no heat and no harsh chemical solvents. We use organic Israeli Dates Palm oil, Organic Coconut Oil, and Sunflower Oil together are used to absorb the aromatic oils from the gardenia flower petals. In our enfleurage, we select fresh blossoms in all the stages of bloom to ensure that the pomade memorializes gardenia’s hyperreality growth stages.
Every day sometimes twice a day we check the flowers resting on the fat to make sure it is still moving and exhaling aromatically. A flower may last aromatically on the fat anywhere from one to three days. We then recharge the fat with new fresh flowers when the previous flowers are aromatically spent.
Once the Desert Date Palm, Sunflower, and Coconut Oil are completely saturated with the essence of the gardenia flower, the flowers are strained from the fat and then bottled with love.
The process for producing the Gardenia by Enfleurage is quite labor-intensive and requires many pounds of gardenia flower petals per ml of oil, but the results are astounding. Most would find it difficult to differentiate the aroma of the oil from that of the actual gardenia flower.
Patience is a must in making enfleurage oil where other methods are rushed, enfleurage demands attending to each individual blossom rather than piling them collectively in a vessel and removing them collectively and slowly. It is this individualization of the flower which enables enfleurage to build an aromatic portrait so saturated, realistic, vivid, yet nuanced, that it eclipses all other available recording techniques in natural perfumery.
What is enfleurage?
Enfleurage is a beautiful ancient technique of extracting fragrance from delicate flowers. The botanical is placed onto a layer of fat that absorbs the scent of the fresh breathing flowers. The flowers are replaced every day or every few days for an extensive period of time until the aroma is completely captured. The base that absorbs the flower-scented molecules is called a “pomade”. Literally, “in flower,” enfleurage is a traditional, labor intensive, and pure method of extracting flower aroma, utilizing only fat and plant material.
There is a method that was devised in France in the late 18th century using animal fat such as lard, and then the fat was further mixed with alcohol then heated to burn off leaving the enfleurage oil. However, We do stop at the “pomade” stage, so NO alcohol spirits are used in our batch, and the fat we use is organic, 100% plant-based, and Kosher.
Pomade Enfleurage was also historically made in Ancient Egypt, Israel, and most of the Middle East which used the same technique of applying flowers to a base of fat long before 18th Century France started their alcohol technique. In Israel and parts of Egypt, Date Palm was most commonly used during Biblical times by very skilled perfumers and apothecaries often not only used for perfume but as a medicine too.
