African Sandalwood Muhuhu

5ml High-Quality Essential Oil (Aged 5 years)

Brachylaena hutchinsii

From East Africa

Also known as muhugu, mubuubu, watho, mvumvo, mshenzi translates loosely as “wood of paradise” in Swahili. Usually straight-grained with a very fine, even texture.

Dark yellowish brown heartwood (sometimes with darker streaks) and narrow grayish sapwood. Exudes a pleasant odor when cut to build furniture and to build a frame for modern homes.

In Hebrew Black African and Ethiopian Jewish communities who live in Israel, this lovely sandalwood is burned as incense in homes and restaurants. When I smelled this one in a friend’s home in Israel it brought back childhood memories of Africa and it was obvious we needed to get it in essential oil form.

This is why we decided to carry this one because it represents the diverse Israeli people. When I smell this oil I think of the time of when I was living in Africa as a child. And My visits to Ethiopia as an adult. It is to me Africa and Ethiopia together in a bottle.

The aroma is Dry, Earthy, Tannic, Woodsy, Smooth Buttery, and Sweet with a hint of Smokey notes. This one should not be smelled through the bottle but applied to the skin to experience the aroma properly. Do not expect this to have aroma like Sandalwood Mysore because African Sandalwood has its own unique aroma. WE LOVE IT!

This gorgeous oil has an exceptionally sweet and slightly smoky wood base and is much like our aged Amyris. We like selling Muhuhu/African Sandalwood when the fresh distillation green notes have been aged out for at least five years to bring out a more concentrated deeper aroma. Like many other sandalwood woody type essential oils,

Muhuhu improves with age. Definitely worth the waiting time! Blends well with jasmine, rose, vetiver, Amyris, Elemi, Frankincense frereana, and  Frankincense carterii, pink peppercorn, lavender, vetiver, Ylang Ylang and can help boost Sandalwood essential oil in a natural but very complex perfume blend. Also blends well with citrus oil like Joppa Orange, Etrog, Mandarin, and Bergamot.

Main Chemical Constituents analysis: Brachyl oxide (8.88%), Copaenal (8.47%), alpha-Amorphene (8.46%)

King Solomon of the Bible/Tanach did much trade with East Africa where the Queen of Sheba who was possibly the Queen of all of Africa was born there and where these trees still grow today.  Some Sages and Scholars say the Queen of Sheba was the ruler of both Ethiopia and Egypt which both were said quenched with water that flowed from the Garden of Eden out of the Holy Land.

In Israel, there are a few of these trees growing in forest areas and are heavily protected thanks to the Ethiopian Jewish Communities who petitioned the Israeli Government to not chop these trees down to create frames for new housing.
