Family Traditions:
A family member who passed long before I was born would place a piece of resin into the cup of Elijah at Passover Seder. No one knew why he did this and no one else continued the tradition. As a matter of fact much of the family would say he probly did not know why he did it. But he did say it eased the suffering in Egypt. Implying this customs was done in Egypt while enslaved by Pharoah.

I had came across Talmud text some years ago that talked about the custom placing a piece of resin into wine which validated the custom did exist,. but since had lost it until a few days ago when I was watching a live video put on by one of my favorite Facebook groups. The guest speaker Ryan Bambrick mention the custom and Talmud reference and I almost fell completely out of my chair.

I immediately contacted Ryan and we spoke on the phone and he gave me text again. Tractate Sehedrian Folia 43a. We spoke about the custom and I shared my family’s strange custom.

The text says “Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto the depressed in soul or one who is facing adversity. And it has also been taught; The noble women in Jerusalem used to donate and bring it to fulfill the mitzvah. If these did not donate it, who provided it? As for that, it is certainly logical that it should be provided out of the public [funds]: Since it is written. ‘Give’, of what is theirs.”
It seems when I researched it more the Rabbis and Sages tell us that the drink was given to bring a sense of peace to the individual who is bitter in their soul. Those who struggle with periods of depression. You could call these periods of time being bitter in soul.

The Resin and wine combination would make sense that it would give a sense of peace because back in 2008, researchers completed a study on the impact of frankincense on depression and anxiety. Pharmacologists at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem said evidence indicates that the aroma of frankincense might help regulate emotions such as anxiety and depression. Research shows that lab mice exposed to frankincense were more willing to spend time in open areas, where they typically feel more vulnerable. Scientists say this indicates a drop in levels of anxiety.

Again here it is verifying that the custom of Frankincense into wine. Burning the resin has cooling effects and was recommended by the famous 11th-century Arabian physician, Avicenna, and Jewish physician Maimonides used as a remedy for illnesses that increased the body’s temperature and for infections.

The inner white root of a young plant of the Frankincense tree was chewed for thirst-quenching purposes as well as a food. The leaves of the tree were often gathered to feed to weak and even favored livestock. Frankincense was also added to wine as a perfume though it is said that drinking too much of this would cause madness.

So in summery not sure why the tradition of putting resin into Elijah’s cup other than according to Chassidic tradition it is Elijah that announces the Moshiah (Messiah) has arrived, but no mention of putting resins in Elijah’s cup.

Some commentators say that when Elijah drinks from the cup at the seder he will then hand it to Moshiach (Messiah) to reveal his arrival. Interesting view of the tradition. I am suspecting the passing down this story of Frankincense resin in wine of Elijah’s cup in my family somehow the passing down of tradition could have been told differently than what the original tradition was and could very well have been just a well placed glass of wine on the seder table with the resin inserted simply for remembrance of those lost in the past.

Reviving Family tradition.

So at our Seder we decided that we would place a cup of wine on our table that I put one piece of Frankincense Boswella Sacra into the glass to revive family tradition and to commemorate those who died as slaves in Egypt and for those who perished in the Holocaust.

Before Jewish people were put to death in these times of trouble, noble women in the community were allowed to bring wine to those dying. They put Frankincense into the wine to make their passing easier, and to dull their senses and bring sense of peace. So in a small way this is how we can remember, so that those perished will never be forgotten.

Some other Biblical Traditions of Wine and Resins.
The use of Frankincense in sacrifice is from Lev Chaper 21. And when any will offer a meat offering unto the L-RD, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon: And he shall bring it to Aaron’s sons the priests: and he shall take thereof his handful of the flour thereof, and of the oil thereof, with all the frankincense thereof; and the priest shall burn the memorial of it upon the altar, to be an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the L-RD: And the remnant of the meat offering shall be Aaron’s and his sons’: it is a thing most holy of the offerings of the L-RD made by fire. And if thou bring an oblation of a meat offering baked in the oven, it shall be unleavened cakes of fine flour mingled with oil.

It would be interesting to Christian readers that in your Bible text Mark 15:22 you will see that it was a Jewish practiced custom to give wine mixed with resin. In this case was with myrrh. “Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.”

Not surprised this is there since he was Jewish and the women who were there were Jewish. So when he was being hanged by the Roman Government they may have been women who made this wine with resin to fulfil the mitzvah of giving strong drink to the person that was going to his death. Proverbs 31:6-7 recommends this mixture of wine and resin.

Give strong drink to him who is perishing, And wine to him whose life is bitter. Let him drink and forget his poverty And remember his trouble no more.
Prov 31:6-7

Why Myrrh Not Frankincense? Well my answer is from what I can gather it can be either or even both resins when you take in account the Christian Bible texts, but frankincense was most commonly used and is well documented in almost all Jewish texts. Some commentaries I have seen seem to imply and say that maybe the Christian Bible was wrong in it’s translation or had no understanding of Jewish custom that it was frankincense instead like the Talmud states. Regardless there is the resin and wine mixture is mentioned which is a Jewish custom.

Also I think this interesting to mention in the Talmud tractate Sehedrian Folio 43a in Gemara section speaks about a man being hanged on the eve of Passover. I am not allowed to write it all out here because in this Gemara texts warns not to write about it so this is as far as I can go. Do your own research and see what you may find on the topic.
