Aroma is a complex citrus, sweet floral, powdery oil with a hint of green leafy notes.

Wild Indigo Essential Oil is not a mainstream oil, and it possesses a unique profile of therapeutic benefits that is a must-have. It’s a powerful extract derived from the whole plant, including the flowers and leaves, of the Baptisia tinctoria species, also known as American Indigo or Yellow Wild Indigo.

This plant is native to North America and has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly among Native American tribes. While not technically an “essential oil” in the same sense as steam-distilled oils, it’s typically obtained through solvent extraction, resulting in an oil that captures the plant’s potent healing properties.

Composition and Extraction Method

Unlike many essential oils, which are extracted through steam distillation, Wild Indigo Oil is generally extracted via solvent extraction or maceration. Solvent extraction involves using a solvent like hexane or ethanol to draw the active compounds from the plant material, which is then evaporated in vacuum crucible, leaving behind the concentrated oil. A long-processed Maceration Essential Oil, on the other hand, is a gentler process where plant parts are soaked in an oil for a prolonged period, allowing the oil to absorb its medicinal properties, and is a whole-spectrum concentrate oil.

The composition of Wild Indigo Oil includes key components such as flavonoids, isoflavones, and polysaccharides, which contribute to its therapeutic actions. These compounds work together that may provide anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and immune-modulating benefits according to several research documents.

We gather the Wild Yellow Indigo plant in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, and it is a 180-day maceration process of the plant material, which is recharged ( ie, replaced) with more plant material every few weeks during the 180-day process until the desired aroma and color are achieved. Sunflower and Shea Butter oils are used as the fatty solvent oil to capture this lovely oil.

Use of Wild Indigo Oil can affect its effectiveness. Here are some safe and effective application methods:

  • Topical Application: Dilute the oil in a carrier oil (such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, or almond oil) before applying it to the skin. Use a 2-3% dilution ratio for general use and a lower dilution for sensitive areas. It’s always advisable to conduct a patch test on a small area of skin before applying it to a larger area.
  • Massage Oil: Mix it with your favorite carrier oil to create a soothing massage oil that eases muscle tension and promotes relaxation.
  • Lymphatic Massage: When used with targeted lymphatic massage, it helps support drainage. Gentle strokes toward the heart are beneficial.
  • Inhalation: Although it’s not typically used for aromatherapy via diffuser, a few drops of diluted oil can be gently inhaled via cupped hands to aid respiratory issues.
  • Compresses: Soak a clean cloth in warm water mixed with a few drops of diluted Wild Indigo Oil and apply it to the affected area to alleviate pain or inflammation.

Wild Indigo Oil can be effectively combined with various other essential oils to enhance its benefits: Eucalyptus: To enhance respiratory benefits, making it an excellent blend for colds or flu. Tea Tree: For its synergistic antimicrobial effects, especially for topical applications in skin infections. Lavender: To add soothing properties to promote relaxation and reduce inflammation. Frankincense: To boost the immune system and amplify the anti-inflammatory effects.Ginger: To add warming and anti-inflammatory effects, useful for muscle and joint pain.
