Tamar’s story highlights the wisdom and resourcefulness of women in biblical times. tamar is one of the ancestors of Moshiach through tribe of Judah. Tamar was the daughter-in-law of Judah (twice), as well as the mother of his twins. She endured much abuse and rejection, but kept her faith in her destiny, and G-d provided her a way to fulfill it. That meant even risking her life, her status as a Jewess, and her modesty within the community, she had enough faith to take the chance. Read her story in Genesis Chapter 38.

G-d was not pleased at what happened to Tamar and how she was treated. G-d cares about widows and others considered to be the “least” in the world, such as orphans. When G-d later set forth laws for the people to live under, caring for widows was one of His provisions. We see in Tamar’s story; she didn’t do anything to cause her first husband’s death.
G-d put Er to death because he was wicked. Because of the Leverite Custom and laws G-d also wanted Er’s brother Onan to then be her husband and continue the bloodline, but Onan, too, was wicked and circumvented G-d’s plan.
When she took matters into her own hands, she was not condemned for this but, rather plays a significant role in Judah’s transformation and he confesses and acknowledging his son’s sins and his own and declares Tamar is righteous. Judah did wrong by Tamar. Yet, when confronted with his sin, he repented. Out of his trickery, G-d’s great mercy is glorified. G-d works through all things, even messy, complicated relationships, to redeem.
