It is a native of South East Asia and is much cultivated on the Indian East Coast, for example in the Ganjam district of the Orissa province. The trees are found growing along seashores, banks of rivers, ponds, and canals. The male flowers have a pleasant fruity-rosy aroma. The plant grows both male and female flowers.
Honestly, at first, I was not a fan because of the pungent smack-you-in-the-face aroma, but after working with this oil it definitely gives blends a unique and elevating aroma, sometimes it will have tuberose or black current-like aroma and in some floral blends it can be grassy green sweet antique rose almost like rosa centifolia with a citrus pine splash!
The GS analysis shows the main constituents of Kewda is phenethyl methyl ether (pandanol) (38 %), together with terpinen-4-ol (19 %), alpha-terpineol (8 %).
I agree with the Danish pharmacist Steffen Arctander who made a great career as a Natural Perfumist describes the aroma “It has a very powerful, strong diffusive, peppery and penetrating pine aroma, warm-floral, but when the essential oil undiluted is rather grassy sweet-pungent floral and peppery aroma. In blending with the essential oil with different oils it will take on unique notes and a life of its own in elevating a blend because of its constituents.”
