It is also called Lemon Calamus also known as “sweet cane grass,” Lemon Calamus is an ancient herb that is perhaps what we now know as Lemongrass. In Biblical times, the Lemon calamus was most likely used as food, in perfumes, incense, and possibly the calamus grass mentioned as an ingredient in the special Holy Anointing Oil used by the Priests in the Holy Temple. Calamus, Song of Solomon 4:14; Ezekiel 27:19, or Sweet Calamus, Exodus 30:23, or Sweet Cane, Isaiah 43:24; Jeremiah 6:20.These are probably names for the same plant. It seems to have been an aromatic reed brought from a far country.” Lemongrass is “a plant of remarkable fragrance and a native of Central India, Middle Eastern countries where it is used to mix with ointments, on account of the delicacy of its odor.
Lemongrass grows all over Israel and is easily available in the plains and rocky hills of Israel such as the Golan Heights where it is often prepared in Israel Cuisine. A kibbutz not far from the city of Ofakimabout 30 kilometers west of Beersheba, grows Lemongrass to distill into essential oil and hydrosol and made into cosmetics. Much is harvested as well for the food industry of Israel and many herbalists and apothecaries in Israel use Lemongrass in their elixirs for herbal medicines.

Recent research at the University of Ben Gurion in Israel has identified and isolated the chemical Citral in Lemongrass which makes it function as a natural herbal cancer remedy. Citral gives the lemon aroma to Lemon Verbena and MELISSA as well and functions as a natural herbal remedy for cancer.
