History and Folklore of the Name:
A wild yellow flower regarded as a weed throughout most of the United States, St. John’s wort has been used for medical purposes in other parts of the world for thousands of years. Named for St. John the Baptist (because it blooms around the Jewish holiday Pesach Passover and it is believed this was when he was born so this is the connection to the holiday. St. John’s wort is continually being studied to try to demonstrate its benefits.
The plant was harvested on Saint John’s Day (June 24) around the Shavuot feast of Pentecost, which is often the time of peak blooming. Another legend holds the plant released its blood-red oil on August 29 around Rosh Hashanna or Yom Teruah the Feast of Trumpets, the date of St. John’s passing.
Many Bible scholars say this flower is quite possibly the Biblical flower Rue and many historical authorities have debated whether the infamous Rose of Sharon as mentioned in the Bible is really St. John’s Wort although botanists have confirmed they are two distinct plants but abide in the same family species.
The herb, while normally used for medicinal qualities, the striking arrangement of its five yellow petals resembles a halo was also thought to have the power to drive away bad spirits and stave away demons. For many centuries the herb has been used as a remedy against depression or anxiety, primarily because medieval Christians believed demonic spirits were the source of a person’s melancholy. Today we know this was just superstitions at best.
