It is used in horticulture as the flowers are showy and very fragrant. known as Red Ylang Ylang, Southern Allspice, Bubby Sweetbush, Carolina Sweet Spice, Carolina Allspice, but does not smell like Allspice. Found all over east coast mainly in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
The bark of the plant is edible and is often described as sweet candy spice. The petals of the flower are also often used in medicinal tea-making by Native Americans. Flowers are described and candied cherries with a spice green note.
Medicinal use of Eastern Sweetshrub is that it is a Emmenagogue by an infusion of the bark as a tea has been used to treat urinary problems. The contituents within the plant is reportedly used as a disinfectant. Often used to clear air and used in DIY creams and lotion as a pain reliever or deep joint and muscle pain. Often use as a base for natural perfume making sprays
Not to be used by anyone with heart condition. Strong caution is advised however, as an alkaloid in the plant may lead to heart palpatations for some people. Do not spray in face and caution when using on skin. Dicontinue use if reaction occurs.
