Cistus is considered are rare oil. The “rose of Sharon” is probably the cistus or rock-rose. Mount Carmel abounds in the cistus. Cistus Essential Oil has a very strong, sweet herbaceous, musky scent. It does not smell like a rose.
Common Uses Antimicrobial, Antiseptic, Astringent, Balsamic, Expectorant, Coughs, Colds, and Rheumatism. Skin conditions, ulcers, tumors; Digestive; cancer treatment rose of Sharon (Cistus Ladanifer), commonly known as the “rock rose” grew in biblical times in the valley of Sharon in Israel. Its leaves and stems are sticky, eluding a gum which was collected by the Shepherds from the hair of goats that had gotten entangled in the bushes.
Today, scientific research has discovered it might be more effective on cell regeneration of skin. Ancient days Shepherds used it on small cuts/abrasions for their sheep or when the shepherds themselves scraped/scratched their own skin or knee. Psalms 23:5 says “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil. My cup runs over.”
Shepards carried a cup-like bottle with a top that was filled to the brim with oil which was most likely used to keep their sheep from getting infecttions in their skin from incisions of thorns from thickets and rocks and to prevent and keep flies out of their nostrils and ears from laying eggs. Psalms 23:5 was referring to this custom of Shepards caring for their sheep with oil.
You will want to let the oil warm up before pouring if your house is 55-60 degrees. To do this just hold the bottle in hand for 2 to 3 minutes. Simply turn the bottle upside down with the lid on and look for oil to move in the bottle. If it does it is ready to pour. Or simply carefully pop the top and uses a toothpick to remove a small amount.
Other uses include Bronchitis, respiratory infections, coughs, rhinitis, urinary tract infections, wounds, and wrinkles. It helps with hemorrhages, arthritis, and is known for elevating the emotions and calming the nerves.
