In Biblical times the wine of Cypress was most coveted. Cyprus is renowned for its unique wine production, with a history that dates back over 5,000 years. The climate, geography, and indigenous grape varieties and possibly three types of cypress contribute to the distinct character of the Bibilical wine. There is a variety of hinoki cypress growing in the region and has a possible Biblical connection.

King David used cedarwood and cypress in building his palace (2 Samuel 5:11; 7:2), and it was also used in building the Holy Temple (1 Kings 5:6; 2 Kings 19:23), which was almost completely paneled with cedar and fragranced with Cypress branches throughout (1 Kings 6:6, 16, 18, 20, 36). 1 Kgs 6:15 says “he paneled the interior temple walls with cedar boards; from the temple floor to the surface of the ceiling, he overlaid the interior with wood. He also overlaid the floor with cypress boards.”

Solomon used it in his Palace of the Forest of Lebanon, with cedar columns, beams, and roof and wood from cypress trees (1 Kings 7:2). It was also used in the construction of the second Temple also (Ezra 3:7). II Sam 6:2 says “And David and all the house of Israel played before G-d on all manner of instruments made of cypress wood, with harps, and with lutes, and with tambours, and with sistra, and with cymbals. So, instruments were made of Cypress also.

The abundance of cedar as well as cypress wine was seen as a sign of prosperity (1 Kings 10:27; 2 Chronicles 1:15.) David and Solomon acquired their cedar from Hiram, king of Tyre, a city in Lebanon (1 Chronicles 14:1; 2 Chronicles 2:3, 8) where the best cedar and cypress trees was to be found. I Kings 5:8 says Then Hiram sent a reply to Solomon, saying, “I have heard your message; I will do everything you want regarding the cedar and cypress timber

Gen 6:16 says the Ark of Noah was made from Cypress because it was so waterproof. ” Make for thyself an ark of gopherwood; rooms you do make with the ark, and you have covered it within and without with cypress.”

The fact that God planted the cedars in Lebanon was a sign of His power and goodness (Psalm 29:5; 104:16). His ability to break or burn them shows His power to judgment (Zechariah 11:1; Isaiah 2:3; 14:8). Jeremiah warned the king of Judah that, although he rested in a house of cedar—figuratively calling his residence “Cedar of Lebanon”—he would not escape judgment (Jeremiah 22:14–15, 23).

This Hinoki Cypress blends well with rosewood, bergamot, cedarwood, cassia, juniper, jasmine, neroli, clary sage, labdanum, and vetiver essential oils.
