This is a beautiful traditional Sandalwood. Mysore Sandalwood heartwood is first distilled once for essential oil, and then the remaining spent material is solvent extracted to obtain the absolute. This oil is warm, ultra-sweet, buttery, lightly smoky spice and very smooth in aroma. The Heartwood is from our 2006 Heartwood pieces that were extracted in 2009 then the oil was aged another 16 years.
This oil is rich in α-santalol, the constituent that gives Sandalwood its signature woody aroma and is responsible for many of the beneficial effects. In Ancient times in Jewish homes, it was not uncommon to find the inlaid woodworks of the common sycamore tree, sometimes of olive wood, or cedar wood, and in palaces of the Hebrew Kings with Sandalwood.
Everyone knows that the older the extraction of Sandalwood, the more it ages, the more valuable and more coveted this oil becomes. This one was extracted in 2009. I wanted to age out some of those green notes and let the mature side of the heartwoods to take over. This 16-year-old sandalwood is amazing
Bible Texts:
Known in the Bible as Aloes Wood and Almuggim trees that grew in the region Almog in Israel and in Lebanon, see Numbers 24:6, Psalms 45:8, Proverbs 7:17, Song of Songs 4:14
1 Kings 10:12
And the king made of the almug-trees pillars for the house of Adonai, and for the king’s house, harps also and psalteries for the singers: there came no such almug-trees, nor were seen, unto this day.
2 Chronicles 2:8
Send me also cedar-trees, fir-trees, and algum-trees, out of Lebanon; for I know that thy servants know how to cut timber in Lebanon: and, behold, my servants shall be with thy servants.
2 Chronicles 9:10
And the servants also of Huram, and the servants of Solomon, that brought gold from Ophir, brought algum-trees and precious stones.
2 Chronicles 9:11
And the king made of the algum-trees terraces for the house of Adonai, and for the king’s house, and harps and psalteries for the singers: and there were none such seen before in the land of Judah.
Almugwood, as used in 1 Kings is thought to be red sandalwood:
“And she gave the king 120 talents of gold, large quantities of spices, and precious stones. Never again were so many spices brought in as those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon. (Hiram’s ships brought gold from Ophir; and from there they brought great cargoes of almugwood and precious stones. The king used the almugwood to make supports for the temple of the Lord and for the royal palace, and to make harps and lyres for the musicians. So much almugwood has never been imported or seen since that day.)”
— 1 Kings 10:10-12
