Originally almost all the Eucalyptus species in Israel today were from South Africa brought into Israel in the 1920s.
The Western Negev region of Israel, characterized by its extensive Eucalyptus plantations, has been the subject of ongoing debate due to the Eucalyptus species is considered an alien to Israel. Many species can be found in the Negev region. Its scent is delightful to the nose when carried in the wind of desert’s dry air along with growing sweet pungent Lavender Nard, Sweet Rosemary, and the famous Menorah Sage.
Eucalyptus is famous for allelopathy – the chemical inhibition of one plant species by another , which can significantly impact local vegetation. However, the Eucalyptus hero aspects are that Eucalyptus has saved thousands of lives by draining swamps preventing Malaria and in the desert preventing insects that destroy crops by producing strong aroma to detour the creatures from crop preventing what would have been widespread hunger 1920’s and 30s.
This study, conducted in the Be’eri forest and near Kibbutz Re’im, focused on understanding these effects of the eucalyptus trees on other herbaceous plant in many of the surrounding desert communities that are crucial for ecosystem services.
The Eucalyptus holds significant value despite the concerns and threats associated with it. It is an integral part of the Israeli narrative and is closely linked to the Israeli landscape and experience. The tree offers shade, is readily visible, and serves as a source of forage for bees, which are currently endangered, thereby playing an important role in pollination and agriculture. Eucalyptus Smithii is known as the ‘gully gum tree,’ Eucalyptus Smithii thrives in moist low slopes and watery wetlands.
Eucalyptus Smithii is considered one of the gentler Eucalyptus species, making it a suitable option for individuals with sensitive skin. Its scent is mild and camphor, with fresh and slightly earthy notes. When properly blended with carrier oils, it offers similar benefits to other Eucalyptus varieties, but in a softer manner.
Eucalyptus trees are not specifically mentioned in the Bible, but trees in general are often used as metaphors for faith and growth. Psalm 1 Could be a reference of future Eucalyptus trees. The text describes a person who is “like a tree planted by streams of water,” symbolizing stability and fruitfulness in one’s spiritual life. Eucalyptus was brought to Israel planted in swamps to drain them to prevent malaria saved literally thousands of lives.
*Update: As of Oct 2023, many of these areas of the Negev regions of local produce crops and farms were destroyed by the horrible attack from Gazans on the Israeli citizens living in the area. Proceeds from sales will help Israeli survivors to rebuild and recover. Am Yisrael Chai!
