The call gratefulness and thanksgiving appears several times in various books of the Bible with minute variations in each verse.
The most common verses are worth learning in Hebrew because it is a part of many prayers found in the Siddur Jewish prayer book and because Hebrew is considered the intimate holy tongue of G-d it may be a good idea to confess this call for thanksgiving in Hebrew:
”Ho•dú la•Adonái ki tov ki le•o•lam chas•do’’. ‘O give thanks to the L-rd; for He is good; for his loving kindness endures forever.’ I Chronicles 16:34 (also in Psalms 106:1, Psalms 118:1 and 29, Psalms 136:1,2,3 and also verse 26 with a glorious poetic variation): ‘O give thanks to the Lord; for he is good; for his loving kindness endures forever. O give thanks to the G-d of the Most High; for his loving kindness endures forever. O give thanks to the L-rd of lords; for His lovingkindness endures forever.’
Modern hebrew word for turkey is the same word for thanksgiving or thankfulness. Hodu is also a root word of the tribe Judah (Yehudah) “hud” meaning Give thanks Yehudah also is hebrew for the word Jewish meaning the nation of people, and the name Yehudah means “give thanks to G-d” or ” His people who give thanks to G-d”. We should always be grateful and thankful to G-d for all He does and provides for us no matter where you are are from, or from what background.
Some thought from Pnei Hashem
“Judaism” is derived from the name Judah, the anglicized version of the Hebrew name Yehuda. “Yehuda/Judah” was one of the twelve sons of the Patriarch Jacob. Though the Israelite nation was comprised of twelve tribes – corresponding to Jacob’s twelve sons from whom the nation descends – the entire nation became known as “Yehudim” or members of “Judah-ism” (Judaism) for two reasons.
Historically, it is because when the kingdom of Israel split in the 8th century BCE, ten of the tribes were eventually lost and the remaining nation was ruled by kings from the tribe of Judah. It is decreed that the ultimate king, the Messiah, will come from Judah as well. Because the tribe of Yehuda/Judah ruled, and would rule, the remnant of the people, the entire nation came to be known and Yehudim, or Jews.
