This is a ancient fruit that is a grafting of Red Lemon and Etrog Citron fruit together is a small to medium size, vigorous and very thorny tree, which can grow up to 5ft in a pot, more in the ground.
Fast-growing, this citrus fruit produces large white flowers followed by beautiful fruit with thick and lumpy skin, yellow washed with red, becoming blood red when ripe, containing a sparse, moderately acidic and very aromatic pulp. Commonly found in Spain, Italy, Israel, Iran, Yemen, Jordon, Egypt, and Morocco
The red lemon or Citrus medica pigmentata is a fairly old ancient variety of red citron, and is sought after by collectors because it is still not widely available on the market. It is a beautiful citrus fruit probably resulting from the grafting of a red lemon tree and a etrog citron tree. Most likely cultivated and grafted in medeterranian middle east before being introduced to Spain and Europe
Medium-sized, it forms a small, highly ornamental, thorny tree. Its large white flowers are intensely fragrant, and its superb fruits are like nice palm-sized lemons, with a thick, lumpy skin that changes from soft yellow to blood red. Their yellow, acidic and aromatic pulp resembles that of the classic refreshing lemon with a wild West Indies orange like citron notes. The peel of the Rouge Citron, which is very rich in essential oil, is used in aromatherapy and perfumery.
The twigs bea thorns and evergreen leaves in winter, similar to those of the lemon tree. They are whole, oval to lanceolate, 5 to 8 cm long and 3 to 4 cm wide, quite dark green, aromatic when crushed. Flowering takes place mainly in spring, in May-June, but can occur again during the summer months.
Coveted in citrus fruits in culinary traditions. Red citron, richer in pulp, can be used to make juices or marmalades, but also in a more classic way to flavor desserts, with grated zest. It is also a medicinal plant whose therapeutic properties are close to those of lemon. Easy to store, this citrus fruit was once carried on sailboats, providing a good source of vitamins to fight scurvy. The wood of the tree is used in cabinetmaking.
