The Rambam highly recommends this fruit be cooked and eaten for its high iron content. Eaten in its raw state, quince has quite a sour taste, along with a gritty texture which is not very pleasant.
Once you cook quince the taste changes to a much more pleasant one and the process releases the delicious natural sweetness. Cooking also changes the texture which becomes much smoother and more palatable.
Traditional medicine practices according to the Rambam combine quince fruit with other natural fruits, to help with digestive issues when consumed after being cooked. It is argued to help IBS symptoms along with other gut issues may benefit from this fruit and its leaves. Often used for respiratory issues and helps calm allergies according to the writings of the Rambam.
You’ll be able to smell their readiness on the trees because they develop an incredibly aromatic sour sweet applely smell that is amazing. Steam distillation does bring the slight tart sweetness citrus notes. A very distinct aroma is beautifully captured in this hydrosol distillation.
Hydrosol do capture the whole molecules of the plant which included little droplets of essential oils this is why it is not recommended to ingest hydrosol but is gentle to the skin for those who have sensitive skin.
Often used in skincare and perfume compositions. Hydrosol is perfect for DIY creams, and lotions as well as excellent for skin care as an astringent toner for skin to lessen wrinkles and fine lines. Discontinue use if you have any skin reactions.
