The muscadine is really a berry but grows in clusters like grapes. They do have a sweetness of grape but a light musky cognac wine-like notes. Seeds are harvested to create grape seed oil and plant new vines. Nothing is ever wasted. the skin of this grape is a little thicker than normal grapes. native Americans call these true grapes.
Wild muscadine grapes, Vitus rotundifolia, also known as Muscadinia rotundifolia; were one of the first things observed by the explorers sent by Sir Walter Raleigh on Roanoke Island. This abundance was likely provided by the agricultural methods of the Croatoan tribe. The fruit’s first name was “Big White Grape”, it later was named after its origin in “Scuppernoug”.
The Muscadine Grape season is very short and so it must be harvested between early August to Mid September. Some of the very best wines are made with Muscadine grape. However, most people in the Southeast United States do not part with them so easily.
Many wineries have tried to take over the market of muscadine grapes growing in the southern parts of the United States where they thrive and grow in abundance and have some of the oldest vines. Some are 100-year vines still producing the most beautiful grapes. And so the people refuse to let these wineries take over and possibly destroy the heritage and long history of these grapes.
These grapes for our hydrosol are harvested from family-owned properties in North Carolina and Tennessee. We usually harvest for food and make juice and sweet table wine, but we take just a small portion of grapes to make our favorite rare hydrosol. The wonderful part is how silky soft it makes skin when sprayed on the face after a shower or anytime. Just close your eyes and spritz lightly.
Excellent for skin care, DIY creams, and Lotions, and we like adding it to Elderberry syrup recipes to give an extra kick to boost the immune system. Muscadine skin treatment has shown to significantly reduce the glycemic response in diabetic patients so the medicinal properties are wonderful.
There is even wonderful folklore saying about Scuppernoug grapes. It is said that these grapes were carried from the Garden of Eden to be planted and preserved by the ancient people and is a true original grape because of the fact these grapes have large seeds whereas most grapes are bred to be seedless. These grapes come in both purple variety and white almost golden bronze vareity. Both are wonderful treasures to experience in taste and smell.
