The long, lush leaves of the Longleaf Pine Tree add an elegant feel to any landscape. Pinus palustris, whose species name means ‘of the marsh ‘, was named the state tree for North Carolina in 1963.
Longleaf pine is the longest-lived of the southern pine species. Individual longleaf pines can reach 250 years in age and there are trees in excess of 450 years old that are documented in North Carolina alone.
These evergreen trees naturally prune their lower branches enabling them to grow almost completely straight. The reddish brown, scaly bark will peel as birds and wildlife chew and peck the bark for insects that make them their home, it the loose bark. The longleaf pine needles are long and dark emerald, green. They grow in clusters at the end of branches.
In the book of Nehemiah 8:15, denotes some pine tree of a resinous nature. A different word in Isaiah 41:19, 60:13, probably indicates the pine; a noble emblem of the promised prosperity of the people of Israel. Several varieties of pines abound upon Mount Lebanon, the largest of which is the sunobar kubar also called longleaf pine; also found on several sandy plains of the Holy Land.
