Lilac is one of the most nostalgic floral notes in perfumery, yet also one of the rarest. Unlike rose, gardenia, or jasmine, which dominate modern perfumery, lilac is surprisingly uncommon, despite being a beautifully delicate, springtime scent.
Lilac perfumes are often soft and romantic, evoking cool spring air, freshly opened flowers, and a powdery touch reminiscent of clean skin. Its rarity comes from the fact that lilac cannot be easily naturally extracted, forcing most perfumers to reconstruct the scent, a technically challenging process indeed.
With spring on the horizon, it’s the perfect moment to explore lilac floral aroma, whether you’re drawn to the freshness of a dewy garden, the sweetness of a creamy dessert, or the mystery of a soft cool spring midnight. Nicknamed the “silent flower” or *fleur muette*, lilac canmot be captured so easily through traditional extraction, so, for eample high heat or chemicals solvent extractions make the soft floral notes simply disappear, as it produces very little essential oils even in steam distillation.

Lilac enfleurage became an obsession for me, as the process always produced a soft, delicate aroma. Then I discovered she loves to mingle with her differently colored sister flowers. By blending purple with pink, white, magenta, and blue, the fragrance transforms into something whole and powerful. Instead of selling that year’s batch, I learned that using flowers from two full seasons creates a richer, more intense enfleurage. This perfume is made with real lilac flowers is therefore a creative reconstruction by using lilac flower absolute, tiny amounts of essential oil, crafted from green, watery flower notes of each, and powdery notes from the various colored blossoms makes the task easier to accomplish. Often the flower is paired with rose, lily of the valley, heliotrope, and green leaves, to evoke its fresh, romantic charm and to enhance the flowers sweet notes.
