The most Medicinal and very rare essential oil, hydrosol, and powder is from the plant of the island of Crete, which has been widely used as traditional medicine since antiquity: The dittany of Crete, Origanum dictamnus (Lamiaceae family) or Dictamnus creticus. A variety of compounds, including flavonoids, lipids, and terpenoids have been identified from the plant. Current studies have shown that its extracts and essential oil possess important antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-ulcer pharmacological properties.
Geeks locals considered it to be panacea and used for healing effects in holistic medicine. It grows wild on Crete Island and is also cultivated as an herbal tea plant, condiment, and spice in distilleries of wine, beer, and whisky. Dittany of Crete is highly prized and blooms in the summer months. It is exported for use in perfumery, pharmaceuticals, and to flavor drinks such as absinthe and vermouth.
