From Hebron, Judean Hills in Israel

Grown in Stoney Terra rosa Stone in the Hillside of Judea Hebron in an altitude of 750 meters above sea level vineyard.

We were able to acquire a small amount of these grapes to cold-press. This variety of grapes was almost extinct, and only a few vines remained until it was revived several years ago.

The story began when Dr Diori discovered old grapevines near his vineyard in Givat Harel, near an ancient wine press. This got him thinking, what grapes are indigenous to the Land of Israel? What grapes did King David make wine from?

Israel’s ancient wine production came to a halt when the Jewish People were exiled, and the Holy Land was then largely colonised by Muslim Arabs from other surrounding countries, who do not drink, let alone make wine. Wine grapes were not useful to the Muslim community.  So Jewish natives focused on cultivating the delicious table grapes found in Israel today, which are larger with soft skin, less sugar, and less acid, so this ancient variety was almost lost.

It is believed these are the very grapes that were used in the Holy Temple. These are ancient purple-blue, red grapes found nowhere else but the Holy Land of Israel. The ancient white wine grapes are called “Gendel” because this is the name of a wine found in the Talmud, dating back to the Tabernacle days, which is made from the Semillon white grapes.
