Also known as Native Sandalwood, Desert Rose Sandalwood,  Sandalbox Tree Wood, Budtha Wood, Buddha Rosewood, Bloody Wood, Scarlet Wood, and Rosewood Balvory. It is typically processed in Eastern Australia and Queensland and the oil is from the wood and bark. Much of what you see on the market is not this species Eremophila mitchellii but Santalum lanceolatum instead.

Australian Desert Rosewood Oil is processed from the heartwood and bark of the Eremophila mitchellii, a small tree native to the grazing land of Eastern Australia. Often compared with the more common Sandalwood Oil, although the chemistry and aroma differ entirely. The wood is known for its fragrant aroma when burned and has been used to scent incense over the centuries. The oil is harvested from both the wood and bark.

Eremophila mitchellii was named in 1848 by botanist George Bentham, after Sir Thomas Mitchell, who led the discovery expedition into Australia. No less than 18 species of Eremophila have roots in Aboriginal use. The species mitchellii is noted as having ‘general medicinal purposes.

Eremophila mitchellii occurs in the arid regions of New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia, and East Australia. The tree, very common in Western Queensland, is often confused with Santalum lanceolatum R. Br., both trees being commonly referred to as false sandalwood or faux sandalwood. Initial research was done through the School of Pharmacy, Griffith University, Gold Coast Campus, QLD, Australia. It is considered somewhat invasive, though native to Australia, with over 215 species.

The scented wood is burnt for its pleasant aroma. The oil has also been used for perfumery, bath, massage, diffuser, blending, and a perfume fixative. The rare sesquiterpene compounds lend anti-inflammatory properties to this rare and unique oil.

African Sandalwood Mahuhu in particular blends very well with the rich, syrupy thick oil enhancing its smokey rose notes. This oil loves being blended with Honey Myrtle, Lemon Myrtle,  Rose, Sandalwood, African Sandalwood (Muhuhu), Balsam Peru, and Lavender essential oils.

Major Contituents analysis: 21.5% eremophilone, 14.8% hydroxyl dihydroxy eremophilone and 33% hydroxyl eremophilone.
