The hot steam(from water) helps to release the aromatic molecules from the plant material since the steam forces open the pockets in which the oils are kept in the plant material. The molecules of these volatile oils then escape from the plant material and evaporate into the steam.
The temperature of the steam needs to be carefully controlled – just enough to force the plant material to let go of the essential oil, yet not too hot as to burn the plant material or the essential oil.
The steam which then contains the essential oil, is passed through a cooling system to condense the steam, which forms a liquid from which the essential oil and water is then separated.
The steam is produced at greater pressure than the atmosphere and therefore boils at above 100 degrees Celsius which facilitates the removal of the essential oil from the plant material at a faster rate and in so doing prevents damage to the oil.
Some oils, like Lavender is heat sensitive (thermolabile) and with this extraction method, the oil is not damaged and ingredients like linalyl acetate will not decompose to linalool and acetic acid.
Three Characteristics of Water
The second law specifies that food becomes susceptible to contamination only after having come in contact with a liquid. In other words, simply being fit for human consumption is not enough; unless the foodstuff has been wetted, it does not attain the high degree of potential that is indicated by the possibility of impurity.
In the spiritual sense this means that a “dry” life will always remain safely limited in scope and extent. In order to be in a position to truly realize its potential it must assume a “liquid” quality.
What are the specialties of the liquid state?
Three things characterize liquids: a) a liquid is an adhesive; b) a liquid is a conveyer; c) a liquid always seeks the lowest point of a terrain.
With the addition of liquid, powder becomes a paste, clay a pot, flour a loaf. Liquid is thus a unifier, bonding the dry particulars to a cohesive whole.
While food provides nourishment for our bodies, it would be utterly useless without the fluids that carry it to the body’s every limb and cell (in the words of the Talmud, “He who eats without drink, his food is poison”). In other words, when transportation and integration is needed, be it in the human body or in a river valley, water is the medium of conveyance.
Finally, the solid is a snob. It clings to its station, descending to levels lower than itself only when forcefully dragged down. The liquid, however, naturally flows downward, seeping through the slightest of openings to transport itself from the highest elevations to the lowest plains.
A Fluid Life
The “dry” individual is egocentric, stagnant and jealous of his position. His life is series of “localized” deeds—deeds and achievements which have no effect beyond their immediate time and place, and which leave no lasting imprint on their performer. He stands alone, shunning connection and adhesion with his fellows, particularly with those inferior to himself.
On the other hand, the fluid individual is one who knows that “He who eats without drink, his food is poison.” A thought learned, a goal achieved, must never remain confined to its specific place and parameters; it must affect his entire person and pervade his every thought and experience.
This individual also extends the fluidity of his life to his relations with his fellows. He unites with them so that their endeavors should fuse to a cohesive whole, understanding that “If I am only for myself, what am I?”
And as water, he “flows from a high place to the lowest of places.” He applies his most sublime experiences to the mundane particulars of everyday life; and he relates to every man as his equal, regardless of their moral and spiritual station.
Essential oils that are distilled by using water which is vital, but think of essential oils as the highest liquid levels and potential we can reach. It’s the ruach shemen of our Neshama. When we use essential oils we are giving our bodies what it needs to heal itself. Think of essential oils as your thoughts. If you think negative you are not giving yourself nourishing liquid to heal your body’s waters. If you think positive then you are giving your body’s waters nourishment to make you strong & healthy. Essential oils is the spiritual and emotional connection that give you what you need physically for the body to heal. Without water the essential oili is stuck within the plant and cannot come to life. How important is water. Dr. Emoteu says it is very important because water records it’s environment. Example how water can be affected by our thought and even out attitude changes water. After crossing the Sea of Reeds with G-d’s unforgettable help, the Israelites continued on into the wilderness of Shur. Three days into their journey without water, their mood turned ugly. The water at Marah was too bitter to drink. Sages tell us that the reason the water was bitter was because we were bitter and un grateful. They groused and G-d instructed Moses to sweeten the water with a piece of wood, which he did successfully (15:22-25). The incident is note worthy only as a harbinger of uprisings to come. Miracles failed to change the Israelites into long-term believers and the water read the messages of their thoughts loud and clear.
It is the midrash that lifts the episode out of the ordinary. On the verse, “They traveled three days in the wilderness and found no water” (22), some mystically inclined Rabbis opined: “Water actually stands for Torah, as it is said (by Isaiah, 55:1), ‘Ho, all who are thirsty, come for water.’ Having gone for three days without Torah, the prophets among them stepped forth and legislated that the Torah should be read on the second and fifth days of the week as well as on Shabbat so that they would not let three days pass without Torah” (Babylonian Talmud, BavaKama 82a). Torah is referred to as the waters of life.
Water is life it affects everything and releases the power within us to heal. Water is Everywhere, even inside stones. As Water is the easiest to take in new information and pass it along. Essential oils are the smell of the plant that become real and physical in a oil form and gets revealed and comes to life through the use of water. Without water we could have never seen the deep plant essence it’s smell.
