Made from fallen bright red and deep red brown wood bark, branches, cones and leaf material from privately own property in Northern California and Oregon Border where several trees stand on the owner’s property. We never cut or harm any tree only gather what was fallen to the ground from around beneath the tree’s feet. Has an aroma very close to Eastern and Western red cedar oil but with a piney citrus twist. It reminds me of fog drenched forest, fresh rain and in the crisp coastal PNW air.
The color is a thin yellow to light jade green in color oil. We conducted three batches from the one time gathering of tree plant materials and the color of the oil varied depending on amount of each part of the tree plant material was used in the distillation. We got close to 60ml in oil and 45oz of hydrosol from the distillation.
This tree is so amazing and seeing the big feet of the the tree makes you think that tree could walk off at anytime, but yet it stays to protect other trees in the forst which why we only take what has fallen to the ground for this special one time distillation project. Aroma is a citrus piney pungent cedar with tenacity much like wester red cedar oil. This project was definately worth our efforts.
The essential oil of the leaf, cones, and wood of giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum and Sequoia sempervirens) was gathered to distill this special oil. We did not do a test analysis since we already know our process and gathered plant material used.
However, some researcher have found that twenty-nine and twenty-four compounds were identified in the oil from needles and wood, respectively. Both oils were found to be rich in monoterpenes, with α-pinene (45.1% and 44.5%) as the major component. Thirteen compounds were identified for the first time in the needle oil. The most striking difference among the oil samples was the presence of 9,10-dehydro-isolongifolene and the absence of elemicin in the wood oil.
**FYI the giant sequoia is listed as an endangered species by the IUCN with fewer than 80,000 remaining in its native California. New trees are being planted in California and Oregon to help perserve this massive gorgeous tree.
Many trees grow all over California and Southern Oregon and because it is a tree being replanted care is taken seriously. Interesting to note the tree was introduced to the U.K. in 1853, and by now might have 5,000 mature trees growing there. This is why we only gather what has fallen to the ground tree plant materials and is a one time project of distillation. No tree was harmed in any way.
Please note photos are sample of what these trees look like. No pictures were taken on private property to protect the owner’s privacy and their location.
