I always wanted to capture the elusive aroma of these tiny flowers since I was a teen and put in my little collection of solid floral perfumes. My grandmother graciously taught me how to tincture, macerate, and lay the blossoms in fats. When I successfully achieved enfleurage a lovely maceration essential oil I just could not stop there.

I discovered the key to getting a good hydrosol from lilac was from not using a copper or stainless steel still, but instead a glass still, and not allowing the tails part of the distillation in your hydrosol jar. It was key. So it was a huge celebration for me when I succeeded in producing a lovely Hydrosol from the flower after several failed attempts. See more here on how our lilac is distilled and why it is the best video.

These tiny flowers do not give up their aroma so easily and only cooperated when I used a glass still only. So I knew that I had captured the plant as a whole, both as getting tiny amounts of oil but also getting a nice quantity of hydrosol also. And that was a huge accomplishment for me as well. I still feel this flower has yet another secret to capturing her fragrance in another way, and I will still study her and let the flowers guide me.

The deep, beneficial properties of lilac hydrosol are caused by the active ingredients in the flower,s including indole, lilac aldehyde, and ocimene, all of which can have positive effects when used in moderation. The aroma is a green, slightly sweet, powdery floral aroma. The Steam distillation really will not capture all the complete sweet aroma of lilac flowers you are used to smelling on the bush because it has a more green floral, slightly sweet note when distilled in a glass still, and it certainly captures healing qualities and benefits. In a copper or stainless steel pot, it pulls too many green notes and no sweet notes of lilac, like a glass still will.

The sedative, febrifuge, anxiolytic and anti-inflammatory properties of hydrosol are caused by the active ingredients in the flowers including indole, lilac aldehyde, and ocimene, all of which can have positive effects on the body when used in moderation.

See our Lilac Enfleurage Essential Oil of Flowers on our website, and also see our Lilac Leaf and Stem infused carrier oil made from leaves and stems. We also have Lilac Face Toner as well, and see our Lilac botanical flower powder. We waste no part of this plant when it is in season. These Hydrosols I produce are always made from my personal garden, wild foraged from bushes that are pesticide and herbicide-free. This is a smaller batch, so the supply is limited.

What is Hydrosol/Hydrolat?
Hydrosols are the aromatic remains following a plant, flower, or tree resin steam distillation or hydro-distillation process with similar, but much less concentrated properties of essential oil, and these include some of the properties of the whole oil molecules that you cannot get from just the Essential oil. This is like getting a whole plant therapy in a bottle that can be applied to your skin.

Some people can be allergic to lilac flowers, while its rare it can happen so, do use with caution or completely avoid if you are sensitive and prone to allergic reactions to lilac.
