A medicinal plant specie known from ancient Egypt and, at the moment, there is sufficient evidence to consider this plant a Biblical medicinal plants since Sweet Basil grows wild all over Israel and Egypt considering the two countries border one another. Common sense also would say Israelites would have brought the plant with them from in dried form along with other plants for medicine and as a food flavoring spice from Egypt into the desert.
Basil has been in continuous medicinal use in the Middle East down throughout the generations and are still used in the Holy Land today. Basil is often used in food, but also in rituals such as havdalla in some Jewish communities, for perfumery use, cosmetics uses, and as incense when in dried form. Basil is now being studied further at Hebrew University to determine chemical composition and medical activity with a view to isolating compounds for possible drug development.
