This is not cottonwood oil!
In 2006 we imported originally this Royal Balm of Gilead (Commiphora gileadensis) from Saudi Arabia and Artisan distilled the plant material in Israel where it was once native. It was easily acquired through the American and British communities living in Saudi Arabia. Since that time the Ancient Balsam of Gilead has once again been restored and replanted back in Israel by several Israeli Botonists.
The most well-known is Guy Erlich but certainly was not the only one who successfully brought back this amazing plant back to Israel. Guy Erlich got his first plant from a shoot which was smuggled into Israel by a German scientist out of Saudi Arabia and brought to Israel. The plant is once again flourishing along with the Frankincense sacra trees from Oman.
This is one of the hardest oils to blend because this blend actually has a specific amount of each oil according to the Hebrew texts of the Tanach and Hebrew texts of Jewish Sages. This is an especially well-kept secret like the Shemen sod of the Ketoret (Temple Incense blend).
Ingredients: Made with True Royal Balsam of Gilead (Commiphora gileadensis) distilled resin, sap, twigs , and leaves from Israel and Saudi Arabia, Rose of Sharon (Labdanum) from Israel, with Judean Mint from Israel Jericho Valley. With a hint of Myrtle from Israel, Frankincense, and Myrrh from Oman Holy Land Charged Resins and then Artisan Distilled in Israel. The ingredients are then blended in a base of Pure Extra Virgin Jerusalem Olive Oil from Israel. Proprietary blend not all ingredients are listed.
The ancient Balm of Gilead was the first ingredient of the incense of the Temple and the sole component of the Anointing oil during the Holy Temple period.
Multi uses Joint, muscle pain relief, headaches, and anxiety. Royal Balm of Gilead Plant was originated in the Kingdom of Sheba on the south of the Arabian Peninsala. Apharsemon, known also as the Judean balsam, grew as an agricultural crop only around the Dead Sea Basin in antiquity and achieved fame by its highly reputed aroma and medical properties but has been extinct for many centuries.
Only the resin of this crop was sold at a price twice its weight in gold, the highest price ever paid for an agricultural commodity in ancient times.
This ancient plant was investigated in a research study for its anticancerous activity against cancer cell lines. The results obtained from ethanol-based extracts indicated that β-caryophyllene (trans-(1R,9S)-8-methylene-4,11,11-trimethylbicyclo(7.2.0)undec-4-ene) is a key component in the essential oil extracted from the balm of Gilead. However, more study must be done and not all the parts of the plant were used as medicine and perfume in antiquity.
The Balm of Gilead (Commiphora gileadensis) is an aromatic resin, sap, also maybe its leaves and twigs are used for medical purposes as well that were exported from Tyre and elsewhere. It was the resin that was most sought after, This is seen in scriptures where it is mentioned that the Ishmaelites (Arabs) who carried Yosef into Mitzrayim bondage were also Gilead Balm traders who were passing through the holy from hills of Gilead in Jericho Valley.
The Holy One arranged for a Spice caravan to bring Joseph to Egypt, so he would be surrounded by pleasant and intoxicating fragrances that enhance dreams and gave him the gift of interpreting dreams such as Balsam, Labdanum (Rose of Sharon), and Frankincense. See Genesis 37:25. The fruit was usually crushed and made into a gooey salve. The resin was used for Holy Temple incense and the leaves were used to make healing oil. The whole tree was used nothing was ever thrown away or wasted.
Balsam trees are native to the Gilead area of Jericho Valley near the Dead Sea. Incisions in the bark of a balsam tree yield three or four drops a day from each, and left to stand the balsam becomes of a golden color and pellucid as a gem. Balm was so scarce that the Jericho gardens yielded only six or seven gallons yearly, which was worth twice its weight in silver or gold. Thus it is referred to as the Royal Perfume.
There is further mention of these trees in the books of Samuel and first Chronicles where we are told the story of how David inquired of G-d whether to go up against the enemy or not and G-d instructed “You shall not go directly up; circle around behind them and come at them in front of the balsam trees. And it shall be, when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the Balsam of Gilead trees, then you shall act promptly, for then I, your G-d will have gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines.”
Take note in this text that our Jewish Sages and Rabbonim (Rabbis) tells us it was the Balm of Gilead tree’s aroma which hid the scent of David’s army. The enemy could not smell them coming in the upwind, but King David could hear them coming to know when to strike.
In the story of Ruth we find the balm of Gilead played a part. Joshua 13:32 :
“These are the areas which Moses had distributed as an inheritance in the PLAINS OF MOAB on the other side of the Jordan, by Jericho eastward.” (This include the Jericho Valley or Hills of Gilead where the Balm of Gilead was cultivated.) Ruth’s family was living in this very same area.
Balm of Gilead or a blend was most likely the perfume she used when she visited Boaz on the threshing floor.
Ruth 3:3-5 what does Naomi tell Ruth to do before and after she goes to the threshing-floor that night? Naomi tells Ruth to wash, perfume herself and put on her cloak. Go to the threshing-floor. “Do not let Boaz recognize you during the feasting When he sleeps, lie down at his feet and uncover him. Do whatever he tells you to do.”
Psalm 56 says “You have taken account of my wanderings; put my tears in your bottle; are not in your book? In the ancient world, when a loved one died, mourners would catch their falling tears in a bottle and bury them as a token of eternal remembrance and devotion. The tears of a loved one are worth more than gold.
Psalm 84 also speaks about Bacha (weeping) where it says ‘How blessed is the man whose strength is in you; in whose heart are the highways {to Zion} Passing through the valley of Baca, they make it a spring, the early rain also covers it with blessings. They go from strength to strength, {all of them} appears before G-d in Zion.”
Tanach texts related to this oil can be found in Genesis 37:25, Esther 1:1; 2:12. Ezekiel 27:17, Jeremiah 8:22, Song of Songs 4:1, Song of Songs 6:13, 2 Sam 5:22-25.
