Aromatically, Ravensara is softer; it doesn’t have that sharp edge that you get from the 1,8 cineole constituent found in the Ravintsara.  Ravensara can have almost a soft licorice sugar spice slight cinnamon undertone, it depends on how much ethyl chavicol is in it, because that molecule will give it a licoricey type of aroma, but it’s a little more earthy lightly citrus than one might expect, sweet chest opening aroma and it has quite a nice scent to behold.

Ravensara is high in Monoterpenes, and in particular in the component, limonene. Limonene is really good for boosting the immune system, so it’s a great immunity system oil. Ravensara does have a molecule and can be concerning, Ravensara can contain a component called methyl chavicol. Methyl chavicol is also known as estragole so if you are pregnant, on a blood thinner, have hemophilia, or take medication it is highly advised to avoid this oil.

Benefits: Antiseptic, Antibacterial, Antiviral, Anti-inflammatory, Analgesic, Anti-allergic , Expectorant, Aphrodisiac, Antispasmodic, Antidepressant,Carminative, Antioxidant, and Antiperspirant.

People do often ask about treating shingles and I can only give you what I have observed with this oil. Back in 1997, a friend got really bad shingles lesions and I mixed some tamanu oil with ravensara oil together and it was amazing to see her quickly heal.

Frankly, I do not remember where the idea came from, but all I knew was both are antiviral oils and these loved one another so much that they worked very well together. Since then I found that several aromatherapists use this same formula for treating shingles. Still today this is the blend I go to with clients who suffer from shingles.

Please note: A person with shingles can pass the varicella-zoster virus to anyone who isn’t immune to chickenpox. This usually occurs through direct contact with the open sores of the shingles rash. Once infected, the person will develop chickenpox, but, not shingles.

Chickenpox can be very dangerous for some people. Until your shingles blisters scab over, you are contagious and should avoid physical contact with anyone who hasn’t yet had chickenpox, especially people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and newborns. So do not go venturing outside and among other people.

Make sure you properly dilute this oil before use.
