Frankincense was one of the ingredients in the holy Ketoret incense, which was burned daily by specially trained, God-ordained priests from the Mishkan (Tabernacle) in the desert to Solomon’s Mighty Temple in Jerusalem, the capital city of Israel.

Frankincense has a rich history as a widely used incense, revered for its uplifting and clarifying effects on body, mind, and spirit. When burned, it is said to provide spiritual protection, uplift the mood, and fill your space with the sacred scent of Israel. Frankincense resin burns slowly, producing an extraordinarily uplifting sweetness with citrus notes. Boswellia carterii is considered the most commonly sold variety in today’s marketplace and is known for its versatility.

This high-quality frankincense resin often includes remnants of tree bark, which we do not separate from the resin, as it enhances the overall aroma experience. Gourged from frankincense trees in Somaliland, the droplets secreted resemble teardrops, which is why they are often referred to as “Frankincense Tears.” This quality of resin was historically believed to cure boils and various skin disorders.

Frankincense is often referred to as a “resin of kings.” In Jewish/Ancient Hebrew tradition, it was used in Holy Temple rituals to anoint kings and priests, and is believed to be one of the ingredients that will anoint the Moshiach upon arrival. In Ancient Israel, frankincense was also used for many medicinal purposes and was macerated or infused into olive oil or jojoba oil for anointing oneself after the use of the Mikvah (ritual purity cleansing) and for healing purposes. Moreover, it has been a key ingredient in many perfumes and healing recipes passed down through generations.

In Christian tradition, it is said that the three wise Magi presented frankincense resin to baby Jesus. This beautiful frankincense resin is soft yellow, with some amber tones, and has a fragrance that is both spicy and woodsy, featuring a complex bouquet with notes of citrus, sweetness, honey, and spice. It produces an exquisite aroma when burned and is often used for addressing pain, nerve issues, hormonal balance, spiritual health, and skin concerns.

We use this same high-quality resin to hydro-distill our Frankincense Carterii Heart Note Essential Oil. See the listing for more information.
