Israeli orange, The Jaffa orange, known by their Arabic name, Shamouti orange, is an orange variety with few seeds and a tough skin, with a flavour that has been described as “excellent” and “sweet and fine that makes it particularlyeasy to eat.
These oranges are very cold-tolerant, allowing them to grow outside of the subtropical regions normally associated with growing oranges.
Originally developed by farmers under British Rule known as British Mandate Palenstein. Jaffa orange is an Israeli orange variety grown all over the Middle East and the Mediterranean today because of export and countries harvesting seeds to grow their own crop.
The orange is believed to have been developed through a mutation of the baladi orange variety back in the mid-19th century near Jaffa, an ancient Judean port city that soon became the main center of production and export of the fruit, thereby lending it its name. This city plays an important role in the Bible in the story of Jonah.
TheJaffa shamouti orange, the fruit is oval-shaped with a thick skin that surrounds the sweet and moderately juicy flesh. Literally run down your arm juicy good as I always says since the day I first tated one inthe 1970s.
This orange is highly appreciated for its tough, yet easy-to-peel skin which gives the fruit its long shelf life.Although it’s nowadays associated with Israel, the production and export of Jaffa oranges actually predates 1948 and these oranges are the pride of the Israelis. The oranges are typically enjoyed fresh or used in various sweet or savory Israeli dishes, and they’re not usually used for juice production because of their low juice content.
